The Indonesian People's Handicraft Foundation Marketing Service (Pekerti Nusantara) has been working since 1975 to preserve traditional Indonesian handcrafts skills and to promote income-generating projects among the rural poor. In Indonesia, a country with one of the world's highest population growth rates, rural families which depend on agriculture have found their way of life increasingly threatened. Income from craft production has become a major source of support for many farm families. PEKERTI offers support to artisan groups on the islands of Java, Bali, and Lombok in the areas of cooperative philosophy, new product development, business management, and micro credit assistance.
